A few weeks ago Seasonic sent us one of their latest power supplies for the mid range, soon to arrive to the Latin American market, ideal for everyone who’s looking for efficiency and performance without overpaying. Without further ado, here’s the M12 II Bronze on its 620W version.
With a price bording the USD $90 in the US (and an undisclosed price for Latin America due to current negotiations between Seasonic and local retailers) we have a model with japanese all solid capacitors supporting up to 105°C of temperature, active PFC, 80 Plus Bronze certification with upwards an 87% efficiency, double bearing fan to maximice silenc and dual PCIe connectors (6 and 6+2 pins) to ensure compatibility with pretty much all the midrange hardware and most of the mid-high hardware.
The unit is designed like any other power supply unit, without special details but excellent construction denoting Seasonic’s quality level among all their products.
The 120mm fan is manufactured by ADDA, part number AD1212HB-A71GL with a speed of 2200 RPM, 85.2 CFM airflow and maximum noise of 39.1 dBA.
The fan uses a standard 3 pin connector, but it’s hard to access without tweezers or specialized tools so we don’t recommend to change the fan using your hands only. The clear plastic we see attached to the fan is there to make the air flow in a “S” shape to better cool all the components.
The bottom part also has a small plastic to improve airflow, just like the last section.
No comments regarding the soldering job, everything’s clean, well soldered and error free.
All cables arranged, properly soldered and without issues.
The front panel of the unit shows us the semi modular design used. The fixed cables are the motherboard (20+4 pins) and CPU (8 and 4+4 pins) connectors, while the modulars are for PCIe graphics cards, SATA drives, standard molex units and FDD.
The bundle isn’t huge, but bigger than in competing products. Besides the “Powered by Seasonic” sticker the cables come in a cotton bag made of the same material as “eco” bags along with four mounting screws. The cables included are:
- 1x PCIe 6P
- 1x PCIe 6+2P
- 3x SATA x3
- 2x Molex x3
- 1x Floppy Disk Drive x2
We feel the ammount of connectors is more than enough, but we would have liked to see two 6+2 PCIe connectors. Anyway, that’s what molex to PCIe adaptors are included with graphics cards.
Test setup and methodology.
After a long deliberation about which way is the best to stress a power supply we decided having only one machine has little to no use, specially because most people know that over certain threshold a PSU can power mosly everything.
From now on our reviews will focus more t0wards the efficiency of the hardware we’re testing, how much money we’re wasting when running our computer compared to other brands and models and using different hardware configurations to achieve different power loads and have a thorough meassuring. The only hardware that we’ll mantain trough different test setups is a small gadget to meassure power consumption and a voltimeter to test the lines stability.
Real world testing.
Regarding the usage experience we have nothing wrong to say. We’re accustomed to having the very best when it comes from Seasonic and this is no exception to the rule. It’s silent, it’s cool and we can’t say anything bad either regarding the PSU use since it can be almost as efficient as higher end models. Something not every manufacturer can claim.
Once again we’re surprised by Seasonic’s power efficient, well crafted and quality solutions. While the brand isn’t as possitioned in the region like its competitors they have nothing to be embarassed about, specially considering that they make many of said competitors products.
Is there anything we’d change about this product? Just one thing: the 6 pin PCIe connector so we have two 8 pin connectors. Not because we’re looking to set a high end graphics card, but because if we run into an accident with the cable (something very likely) having a backup option besides molex to PCIe adapters would be a nice option.
Would I buy or recommend this PSU? Totally! Seasonic’s M12 II has proven to be a serious, competitive and totally deadly option against brands that rely more on marketing than performance with their products. We just hope to see this models on retailers around the region soon and being able to enjoy all the products Seasonic has to offer for us.
